Renewing Alaska Vehicle Registration: Timeline & Costs

Alaska vehicle registration is renewed every two years. The Alaska DMV mails a renewal notice 60 days before your tabs expire — but you can renew without it as long as you have your current registration or VIN.
When can I renew?
You can renew up to 90 days before expiration. Tabs are valid through the last day of the month printed on your registration. Driving on expired tabs is a fine-able offense — and we've seen plenty of last-minute customers race in on the 30th.
What does it cost?
- Passenger vehicles: $100 biennial state fee (varies slightly by region)
- Motorcycles: $60 biennial
- Trailers: $30 biennial
- Specialty and personalized plate fees may apply
