The Alaska road skills test takes about 20 minutes of actual driving. Examiners aren't looking for perfection — they're looking for safe, predictable, lawful driving. Here's how to make sure you walk out with a license.
What examiners score
- Proper mirror, signal, and shoulder-check before every lane change
- Smooth braking and acceleration — no jerky stops
- Full stops at stop signs (count to one full second)
- Maintained lane position with no drifting
- Correct speed for the conditions, not just the posted limit
- Safe backing — controlled, head turned, not just mirror reliance
Automatic fails to avoid
- Striking a curb or object
- Running a stop sign or red light
- Forcing the examiner to use the brake
- Speeding more than 10 mph over the limit
- Unsafe lane change causing another driver to react
Using the Turbo Tags test vehicle
If you don't own a car, we have an insured, well-maintained test vehicle available by reservation. Bring your learner permit and a friend (or arrive on your own). The vehicle is an automatic, easy to handle, and identical to what most new drivers learn on.
How much does the road test cost?
The Alaska DMV road test fee is $15. Using our vehicle adds a small rental fee. Total typically runs under $75.
How soon can I retake if I fail?
You can retake after the cooling-off period set by the Alaska DMV (typically the same day for minor issues, longer for serious infractions). Our examiners will give you specific notes on what to practice.
